Research

PREP Scholars work as lab technicians with a faculty Mentor who leads an active research program in the Division of Biological Sciences. While the research projects are frequently basic in nature, Scholars are encouraged to pursue research in areas that address health problems which disproportionately affect minorities and the medically underserved people of this country.  These fields include, but are not restricted to, respiratory diseases, cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, substance abuse and infectious diseases. Approximately 70% of the time will be spent in the lab, and the rest will be filled with program activities.

Compensation

ALL PREP Scholars receive a salary of $21,000/year for their work as lab technicians, as well as employee benefits. The benefits include health insurance, paid vacation and sick time, and other staff benefits such as free computer courses and personal and professional counseling.

“The program helped me grow scientifically (working in the lab) and showed me how to present data.  The presentation at the end of the year was wonderful for me.”
